Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to California to attend a bariatric conference and collaborate with influencers on cookbooks. However, when I looked into booking the trip, I thought it would be a shame not to take advantage of the chance to have some fun. Growing up, I never had the chance to attend big, exciting events like visiting Disneyland or other popular attractions. And, as I got older and my weight reached nearly 600 pounds, the idea of being in a place with so many people was terrifying.
I confided in my friend, Hunter, and we decided that since we were already there, we should visit Universal Studios Hollywood. The entire trip was already amazing, but the anticipation for that day at Universal was something special. As we drove up to the parking garage, my stomach felt like a 9-year-old on Christmas morning.
Upon entering the park, we headed straight for Mario Land, and I couldn’t contain my excitement. It was like stepping into a video game, and suddenly, I felt like a little kid again. I was smiling, looking around, and I didn’t care if people were watching me. We waited in line for rides, explored the various attractions, and I cherished every moment.
Entering Hogsmead, the Harry Potter-themed section of the park, felt like walking into one of J.K. Rowling’s books. I wanted to soak in every detail, from trying butterbeer to dining in the tavern, visiting the candy store, and watching shows. It was an enchanting experience, and I didn’t want Harry Potter World to end. I felt like I was living in my very own fantasy world.
The day was spent with an amazing friend who, just like me, was a kid at heart. Being with Hunter made me feel safe in this new environment. He was unapologetically himself and didn’t care what others thought. But then, a moment of panic struck. Hunter disappeared while we were looking through a shop, and I suddenly felt alone. Those old feelings of insecurity and self-consciousness rushed back in. I had to leave the shop and head outside, feeling overwhelmed and angry that he had walked away. And then, just as suddenly as he had disappeared, Hunter walked up to me, having merely wandered across the store to look at things. Instantly, I felt calm and secure again.
It was unsettling to realize that those old fears could creep in so quickly, even when I thought I had left them behind. But I learned that it can take a long time to overcome these deep-seated demons and fears.
Despite the momentary setback, we continued to have an amazing day. For most people, it might have been just a fun day or a comparison to Universal Studios in Florida. But for me, it was an entirely new, exciting, and challenging experience, a memory that I will carry with me forever.
This day reinforced the power of friendship and how friends can be there for us in so many ways. Whether it’s embarking on a new adventure, offering support, or simply sharing a great day, surrounding yourself with people who inspire, challenge, and uplift you is truly a blessing. In the end, I discovered that even amidst moments of fear, there is always an opportunity for growth, new experiences, and cherished memories.
