Journey
Growing up in a world of diverse homes and experiences, I faced early challenges, including death, divorce, and feelings of loss and rejection. However, amidst the turmoil, holidays stood out as moments of pure joy and excitement. These occasions not only promised sumptuous feasts but also the warmth of family bonds. My fondest memories were centered around gatherings at my aunt and uncle’s house, where Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Friday night dinners filled our hearts with happiness and our bellies with delicious food.
Food quickly became an integral part of my life, offering comfort and connection during difficult times. These gatherings sparked a deep love for cooking within me, a passion that has remained unwavering throughout my life’s journey. Despite my own battles with weight, cooking became both a refuge from my fears and a source of confidence and satisfaction. It allowed me to serve others, feel needed and valued, and excel in something I cherished.
Despite my enduring love for cooking, my struggles with weight persisted, leading me through various job roles, always drawing me back to the kitchen where I excelled. Realizing that conventional diets and restrictions were not the answer, I made a life-changing decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery. This marked a pivotal moment, where I took control of my health and well-being.
But it wasn’t just the surgery that transformed me; it was a series of events, including an encounter with Coach Hunter’s pushup challenge on Facebook. Although I didn’t win initially, I persevered, and my journey with Coach Hunter and Coach Brandon began. Personal training became an essential part of my life, coinciding with my surgery, and together, they propelled me on a path of incredible physical transformation. Simultaneously, I started adapting recipes to suit my new dietary needs, finding immense joy in creating healthier versions of beloved dishes.
My weight loss journey, totaling an astounding 255 pounds lost, led me not only towards physical transformation but also towards forming invaluable friendships and building a strong support system. Together with a close friend, I established a business teaching food safety and sharing my passion for cooking and recipe reinvention. However, emotional challenges accompanied my physical changes, as food was no longer an emotional crutch. With the help of a trusted friend, I began to confront and overcome these emotional dependencies.
Reflecting on my journey, I understand the importance of motivation, setting realistic goals, and finding the right support. I believe that change begins with a choice, and my story serves as a testament to the human capacity for growth and inspiration. Through my love for cooking and dedication to helping others, I’ve not only conquered my weight but also found a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. Today, I stand over 370 pounds lighter than my heaviest, determined to motivate myself and others, one step at a time.
My deep-seated desire to help others stems from a complex journey that has shaped who I am today. It all begins with the profound need to feel wanted and loved, a yearning that once led me down a path of emotional turmoil. In my pursuit of validation, I found myself constantly seeking attention, often smothering those around me and losing sight of my own self-worth. The journey of weight loss after gastric bypass surgery taught me that the emotional transformation is even more challenging than the physical one.
Losing weight post-surgery may seem straightforward—follow the plan, put in the effort, and witness the rewards on the scale. However, the emotional side of this journey can be a dark and treacherous territory. It’s a constant battle between the old self, clinging to familiar comforts, and the new self, striving for healthier habits and self-acceptance.
As I navigated this challenging path, I discovered that my mind often sought solace in emotional neediness, replacing one addiction with another. It wasn’t substances like drugs or alcohol that became my crutch; instead, it was a craving for attention and affirmation. This internal struggle highlighted the importance of finding healthier outlets for emotional fulfillment.
Over time, I learned to balance my desire to give to others with my need for self-care and self-acceptance. I realized that true transformation is not just about physical changes but about embracing the essence of who you are. It involves confronting your deepest insecurities, shedding emotional baggage, and learning to love yourself.
This personal journey has fueled my passion for helping others. I create recipes and share my experiences to make the weight loss journey easier for those who embark on it. Connecting with the bariatric community allows me to give back and assist as many people as possible. It’s my way of providing support, encouragement, and guidance to those in the community and beyond, ensuring that nobody feels alone on their path to health and happiness.
In summary, my journey from seeking external validation to finding self-acceptance has instilled in me a deep desire to help others. I share my experiences, create recipes, and connect with the bariatric community as a way of giving back and offering support to those on their own transformative journeys. It’s a testament to the power of personal growth and the profound impact it can have on our desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
